That’s so simple, it just might work…right?
A popular trend in video games right now is beating the game with an absurd challenge; examples include beating Super Luigi U without touching a single coin, and beating Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros. Brawl without jumping.
But if you’re an old fella like me, you remember playing GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64, specifically the multiplayer. And every once in a while, you’d choose the “Slappers Only!” mode and just karate chop the crap out of each other. And then the thought would pass through your head: “Can you beat GoldenEye without using a gun?”
Well, RWhiteGoose has finally provided the answer. RWhiteGoose is a top speedrunner for GoldenEye 007, and has many in-depth videos on his YouTube channel breaking down the history of GoldenEye speedrunning. Using his expert skills and knowledge of the game, he has attempted to beat the single-player mode without firing a single shot.
A few things to note before watching: There are some situations where people’s opinions might differ on what exactly “firing a shot” is. For the context of this specific run:
- Planting/detonating a mine or throwing a grenade do not count towards firing a shot.
- Using the watch laser does not count towards firing a shot (it’s worth noting that the game doesn’t consider this a shot fired either.)
- Driving the tank does not count towards firing a shot (however, using the tank’s cannon obviously would.)
So, is it possible to beat all of GoldenEye 007 without shooting? Check out the video to see for yourself!
One thing is certain; for a run where you can’t fire a single shot, you certainly have to take way too many for it to be comfortable!
