This Mockumentary Of “The Smash Brothers” Will Make Your Day

The Smash Brothers is a documentary series released in 2013 that showcased the competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee scene by highlighting some of the top players in the game’s history. With nine episodes, the documentary covers over a decade of Melee competition, with all the highs and lows of playing the game at a hardcore level.

It’s widely been credited for introducing a whole generation of players into the competitive scene (competitors who started after 2014 are often referred to as “Doc kids”) and for rejuvenating the Melee scene in such a way that it was able to carve out its own niche as an esport. If you haven’t seen it, it’s absolutely worth a watch.

But one of the lesser known effects of the documentary was the creation of a hilarious mockumentary series. This series is actually the origin port of several well-known memes and phrases in the competitive Melee community, and while it’s not as well known as the original documentary, it certainly has its place in the image of the overall scene.

The Smash Pros

The Smash Pros is a five-part mockumentary series that parodies the storytelling and style of The Smash Brothers. Many of the characters are direct counterparts to players from the original series (examples being “CC Kris” as a parody of “PC Chris” and “MewTwerkKing” as a play on “Mew2King.)

The Smash Pros pulls no punches and much of its humor relies on the viewer having seen The Smash Brothers; there is direct mockery of the narration, the seriousness in which competitors take themselves, and the different terminology used throughout the series. Because of this, it’s highly recommended to watch the original documentary first to fully understand the jokes and references, although The Smash Pros certainly has moments that are hilarious on their own.

The Smash Pros series is also responsible for spawning several memes, such as “Rev it up, baby!” a quote often yelled by the main character JimJamFlimFlam, as well as the “nooch”, the series’ way of describing a “neutral aerial attack.”

If you’d like to further embed yourself in the competitive Smash culture, you’ll want to check out this series; it even features cameos from some of the most well-known Smash players in the world. The first episode can be seen below:
