The Best Ultimate Wifi Set – MKLeo Vs. Tweek

In the era of online tournaments, it seems fitting that one of the best Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sets we’ve seen since offline events were put on hold would be between MKLeo and Tweek.

At the 8.0 Gimvitational this past weekend, which featured many of the top players in Ultimate, winner’s finals of the tournament would be what’s become a historic rivalry: MKLeo vs. Tweek. The two best players in the world are no stranger to facing off against each other in a high stakes environment, as they’ve frequently duked it out on the big stage.

This time around, they were using some unique characters; Tweek used Diddy Kong, and has had a string of success using the underrepresented character, leading to a resurgence in his popularity, as well as a debate on where he stacks up in the tier list. MKLeo was using his old Smash 4 main Marth, a character who is often tossed aside in favor of Lucina.

Wifi tournaments have been a great chance for pro players to practice new characters and experiment outside of the usual tournament environment; while many online tournaments offer substantial prize pools, the quality of Ultimate’s online still makes it a lesser experience to in-person play.

Despite the subpar netplay, this set between Tweek and MKLeo is certainly one of the best Ultimate sets we’ve seen in months, and a continued showcase just how good these two players are. There were some lag spikes that sour the experience here and there, but overall this matchup gives us top level play from some unconventional characters.

Tweek vs. MKLeo was the gold standard even before events were cancelled due to coronavirus; their grand finals set at EVO 2019 recently cracked over 2 million views on YouTube, and they are always two of the favorites to win any particular major event.

In fact, Tweek went on to claim first at this event, adding yet another victory to his belt using Diddy Kong. It will be interesting to see if he uses the characters as offline tournaments start up again.
